 Joseph Hammond - Photo # 5- Novelty

This is a film still from a first year Ryerson film. The character shown is in deep contemplation inside a chapel. I based the composition off the infamous prayer scene from Shakespeare's Hamlet.  King Claudius racked with guilt prays for forgiveness over the murder of his brother, Hamlets father, the original king. The Novelty of the photo comes from the young age of the actor and a conversation I had with another actor about a Production of Hamlet he had recently seen.

In that production the director had posed one question: What if Claudius was the same age as Hamlet? What a completely Novel Idea to re-Imagine Claudius as the kings younger brother! How different the story would have been to see this man grow up by Hamlets side, to think of them playing as children! Only to have him as a young man kill his older brother and marry Hamlets Mother! To think how the vast age differences would change the motivations of each character! It was such a fresh perspective, such a novel idea!  I just had to use it for my Novelty shot. It was the perfect fit for me.
