Kailee Mandel Family Take 1

Hey guys
so here is my first attempt at family, I was unsure of which photo to use and what crop and composition etc, so any feedback regarding that would be much appreciated. I have a couple more for the inside, but I left that one un-cropped because I kind of like to see all the stuff that was around them, but it seems a bit busy! let me know what you think! This is the family I chose to photograph, I don't want these photos to come off as a joke, they were intended to show my view of a typical family, which is (as cliche as this is) love, these people are good friends of my parents and they are awesome! to some peoples standards they don't have much, but they are content and proud of what they have. hope you like zem

  1. I really like the colour photo of the family outside, but I'd like to see the rest of the porch round the front door and a little more space above the door to breathe. Awesome photo though, the window and door offsets the family and really stabilizes the photo. Props on the colours and composition, nice job.

  2. Kailee, I personally like the interior one. I love these kinds of photographs. I think you could improve it some though. For one the perspective is throwing me off. It looks like you used a wide angle and shot from the left. Maybe try shooting more straight on and try to make all the lines straight- either by correcting digitally, or breaking out the 4x5! Also you're right that its a bit busy. Maybe try experimenting with crops to see what kind of composition works before reshooting. I personally would leave out either the stuff on the left or the cabinet to declutter the image because like you said its quite busy but I do like seeing some of the context of their living space. Also remove the table in the foreground I'd say.

  3. Also I am going to think more about what to say about the lighting. On one hand, it is very harsh and straight on and there is a glare in the glasses. On the other hand it kind of makes it look like a family snapshot, which maybe could be potentially interesting if you dealt with some of the other issues so it doesn't look SO much like a family snapshot?

  4. Right now I'm liking how it would look if you straightened the lines, got rid of the stuff to the left of the couch, and the table in the foreground.
Okay, last comment (for now) haha.

  5. I love the outdoor one in colour. I feel like its the most interesting and I absolutly love the bleakness of it and how the off white of the house and the white of the snow mix. Also the red jackets really make your subjects pop. I think its your best shot. I agree with Andrew on see a little more room with the porch and door but other than that I really love it. Awesome job!

  7. That cat is extremely large.

I'm a fan of the outdoor colour one, and like stated, think it could benefit from a slight shift in composition.

  10. Black and white! woot! I do love it, its simple, it just drew me into the frame, Simple leading lines, beautifully set up, the color don't distract my eyes, since i'm a man and color blind anyways. The B&W to me is simple and classic, Love it!!!

  13. I'd go with the first one. The third one is good too if you fix the orientation, it's crooked.

I think both the first colour and the last are working, though the last does have issues with perspective. Perhaps you could even try to straighten it by rotating slightly? Is there an opportunity to re-shoot?
